Yellowstone began educating people about the dangers of feeding the bears and posted many signs warning against it.

The people who worked in Yellowstone did not want the bears to disappear. They wanted them to be happy in the wilderness. Bears had lived in Yellowstone National Park and the area around it for centuries. Yet the number of bears in the Yellowstone area dropped to just 136 by 1973. Then the federal government stepped in.

The United States has a law called the Endangered Species Act that helps prevent fish, animals, or plants from all going extinct. The grizzly bears in the area were having the same kind of tough problem surviving that the buffalo did.

It took a long time, but, because of the work done to save the grizzly bears in the area, by the summer of 2017, the number had bounced back up to about 700. Just like the bison, they have made a healthy comeback.
